Cain and Abel were the first of 29 to be born between the Belcourt brothers and Lavinier sisters. As with their Biblical counterparts, Cain was a tiller of the ground, while Abel became a shepherd. In a variation on the Genesis tale, Abel took home the top prize with his livestock during a farm-fair competition in late 1877, while Cain, who worked hard on his one-of-a-kind choice cuts, felt he should have won. A confrontation between the brothers soon arose and startled all the onlookers, and police were called in to intervene. Although they learned their lesson, this incident led to a decades-long bitter rivalry between the two, to the point where they went entire seasons without speaking to each other. Despite their occasional misgivings, both managed to live at least 105. When away from the abattoir, Cain also helped his uncle Bertrand and the latter's wife Catriona at their Les Abymes cheese factory. |
