nem- pfx U2a ii a [/nɛm/; nem- (1 syll.)] [Ltn. nēmōWiktionary.]
→ As with the similar nal-, nem- negates roots it is attached to, such as in nemVespuŕesili (non-American); nemmoisildaidi (non-animated); nemvanzaurde (non-profit); and nemyelbaiddiri (noncommercial). Nem- is derivational (forming new words), while nal- is inflectional (the meaning does not change): cf. nemAnglieśnongat (sbj is non-English [not among any works in the English language]) vs. naŕAnglieśnongat (it is false that sbj is in English).
The etymon is the basis of the character name Captain Nemo (from Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea).
