Shortcut: FTA:20221120 we quickly drop back in this overnight, if only because of this very request filing via r/furry. Once again, thanks to interference between MediaWiki:Edittools and the Form-namespace infrastructure as of late (T9882—reported to both Yaron Koren and Phabricator; further investigation/diagnosis pending), this edition of FTA must make do with the traditional MW editbox. Maybe by next time, this may be resolved?

Either that, or after my next successful request, I'll deal with my own pitch at r/ICanDrawThat.

Now, on to far more important matters:

  • Seems I may have finally made up my mind about this season's long-awaited laptop: A brand-new Dell Inspiron 3511, with pre-installed Windows 11...which we'll replace with Windows 10 the sooner, the better. That, plus a couple of new charger-and-cord combos just so my niblings don't have to fight over their mother's own anymore; what they once had became lost and/or damaged months ago. How much spare change I'll have left remains to be seen. After that, first order of the holidays: Start renewing Rogatia via the same planned procedure laid out at "About to go places". (Wish I knew better as such earlier before the old space-challenged HP essentially bricked out.)
  • Soon enough, I'll archive the first post from my Steemit/Hive era; remember the time I was planning to make a Google+ best-of on WordPress?
  • Meanwhile, our current host Miraheze is working behind the scenes to rectify/diagnose the outage crisis surrounding db141, one of the database clusters they maintain. FAQ from mhm:Tech:SRE noticeboard#Cloud14 issues (CC-BY-SA 4.0):

What happened?

A cloud server (cloud14) hosting one of our database, db141, ran into disk issues. As a result, the database cannot be accessed and some services hosted by the cloud server have been knocked offline.

Who is affected?

Only wikis on db141. Affected wikis display an error saying "Wiki temporarily unavailable." Most wikis on Miraheze are fine.

When will this be fixed?

We do not have an ETA but will update you as soon as possible.

Is data loss involved?

We cannot assert anything. It may be possible that the disks are not actually faulty but rather the RAID controller which would mean your data is safe or it's possible the actual disks have gone bad. If it is the latter, that would indicate we received a bad batch of SSDs from the manufacturer.

What other services are affected?

Most notably affected is mail which means emails for password resets and registration does not work. While all other emails like sre@, cvt@, and stewards@ are able to receive incoming mail, we cannot check them due to an outage of our internal login system so we recommend sending us DMs if you need assistance. For power users, you may notice the Recent Changes feed on IRC is down meaning that some IRC bots may not function correctly and Wiki-Bot's recent changes feature is now likely unavailable too. We are working to restore function.

What is the plan for now?

At this moment, we are working to reinstall cloud14 on new disks. Once this is done, we will setup new MediaWiki servers to improve speed and we will work to restore other ancillary services. We are also temporarily downgrading our test server from MediaWiki 1.39 to MediaWiki 1.38 to put it into production which means the upgrade to MediaWiki 1.39 will be indefinitely paused.

Our number one priority at this moment is restoring wikis. About 500 open public wikis are affected by this so we understand this has certainly caused an impact for many of Miraheze's users. Rest assured we have not forgotten about those wikis. Every one of our 5,500+ wikis is important so we are working very hard to restore these wiki's data and bring them back online. We are so grateful that for the patience our users have had before this unprecedented issue. We will be posting updates here so please stay tuned. If you have any questions, please join us on our Discord. Thank you. Miraheze Site Reliability Engineering 00:00, 18 November 2022 (UTC)

Which led to a slew of 50x errors farm-wide on Friday, and (in my own wiki's case) the return of those on-and-off pesky "upgrade key" reminders from Semantic MediaWiki, plus the Vector skin disappearing with similar frequency during Saturday. At press time, 4,100+ wikis remain online; to those affected, I understand your concerns and express my sympathies. (Pro-tip: Better resort to Special:Export [the native old-school method] next time or before it's too late.)

Moving on to one of the more interesting wiki requests I've seen in quite some time (#28047):

This is a migration from Fandom's ( to Miraheze due to Fandom's gradual rotting, and releasing features that either do not help or make things harder to edit - newest forids us from editing the Theme at all unless you abid to bad AA Contrast thingamajig in spite your Wiki being readable, that's how bad it's gotten. They seem to care more about how much cash can they get from All-Star Wikis and turn it into some weird social media than making the place wiki farm-friendly.

We also wish to start anew through import from Fandom and revamp the whole thing since it was created in 2013-2014, so it contains a lot of outdated/unused/obscure pages that need to be redoned without having a bunch of users navigating through the Wiki while we do it.

Let's just say there's a reason for the Anti-Wikia Alliance (AWA) on ShoutWiki.[1]

Concluding, as per usual, with a slew of Shimajiro tidbits. First up, a behind-the-scenes gallery for a WOW! music video, seen on the original TX broadcasts last northern fall. (Animated to the tune of the theme from 2019's Heroland by Feed Me Light of London; found several days ago via extended Google image results for "Shimajiro and friends".)

Directors: Mark Mullan/Simon Duclos for Benesse.

This fan work also occasionally surfaces on the extended "Shimajiro and friends" image results: did this next one a matter of days earlier; thank goodness I bookmarked that before my incognito tabs crashed down last time.[2] (Let's see what r/furry thinks of that next Mother's Day.)

Look hard enough, and you'll come across this throwaway screencap of a simple-looking Kirinta in school uniform. (Kirinta appeared in the early 2000s Kodomo tapes, a decade before he and some other classmates joined the WOW! cast.)

From the latest results for Shimajiro's hiragana:

  • our tiger champion in his Sports Day attire/pose:
  • his appearance in a recycling PSA for McDonald's (which recently hit our Paradise program queues):
  • and his sister Hannah-chan finely dressed for a special occasion.

To OP below: Practically no one but me. (Meanwhile, substantial bits and pieces float around—both official and grey-market—on your favourite major video platform.)

Crossover trivia: Shimajiro teamed up with Sanrio's Hello Kitty in this real-life statue: well as this UN-sanctioned exercise MV for the COVID-19 stay-at-home crowd:

Last but not least, the ending portrait from what is known as "So Many of Us" in English:

And that wraps it up right here, folks; be there soon as I take care of the agenda and the maps, see about my side of an art trade, and try to get my PayPal credentials going—if only to cut as many ties with them as I can per my superior's insistence. Until next we meet, take care, stay safe/connected, keep exploring, tapal, see you in the bestsellers, we'll meet you back home...and watch your tails.

P.S. I'm finally getting my shots soon—a year late. See you after my mandatory rest.

Remembering Elizabeth II; in solidarity with those affected by Ian and Nicole.

To our next ten years...

  2. ^ Better if I invested in a higher-capacity Galaxy Tab A or similar before long, too.
